My Journey with Paddleboarding and Ripple Rebels

Written by Nicki Lewis

Discovering Paddleboarding

In 2022, after moving to the coast the previous summer, I decided to embrace the ocean lifestyle and purchased my first paddleboard. Eager to spend my summer paddling around the sea, I opted for the cheapest paddleboard I could find online, focusing only on its lightweight design under 10kg for easy transport down the cliff path.

Initial Struggles

My excitement soon met reality as even the slightest ripple on the sea tipped me into the water. I quickly became skilled at self-rescue! Seeking calmer waters, I asked locals for advice and was directed to Keyhaven and Mudeford. These spots were better for standing up, but I struggled with steering and control. The fear of paddling alone and my partner’s infrequent availability limited my outings.

Discovering Aquapaddle Bournemouth

After only a few outings over a couple of years, I found out about Aquapaddle Bournemouth in a Facebook forum. It's a 5km timed event, open to all abilities, much like a parkrun. I thought this may be a safer opportunity to get more time and distance on my board, so eagerly signed up for the January event, investing in cold weather gear and a buoyancy aid.

My First Aquapaddle Event

Arriving at my first event, I was surprised by the challenge ahead. Everyone shot off from the start, and I stayed on my knees to keep up. Then my paddle broke, leaving me with half a paddle! I persevered, and though I was the last one on the water, the marshals supported me to the finish. The effort left my arms useless for the rest of the day, but I was determined to improve. Aquapaddle Bournemouth is hosted by Ripple Rebels and I met their Founder, Lynne, who was volunteering as a marshal. We talked briefly about my struggles, and she offered some encouragement and tips, but I didn't explore what Ripple Rebels offer until later.

Progress and Setbacks

I ordered a new paddle and geared up for the next event. However, sadly February and March were canceled due to weather. April’s event was held in very windy conditions and I was determined to take part, I struggled through one lap and then had to retire. In May, I managed to knock a few seconds off my time but still paddled on my knees.

Talking to Ripple Rebels and Starting Lessons

In May, I had a more in-depth conversation with Lynne from Ripple Rebels. We discussed their lesson packages and how they could help me improve my skills. Inspired by her expertise, I decided to book a 4-session block with her, starting just a week before the next Aquapaddle event.

Transformative Training

My lessons with Lynne were transformative. With her expert tips, I quickly improved my technique. In June, I shaved 10 minutes off my time, feeling amazing. Lynne introduced me to different boards and paddles, significantly enhancing my experience. Trying a Gladiator board made mine feel like dragging a rug over carpet. With each session, my paddle stroke improved, and I met other students, sharing our goals and experiences.

Continued Improvement and New Gear

In July, I knocked another 5 minutes off my time and set a target to finish under an hour. Lynne guided me to SUP Inflatables, where I tried various boards on the River Stour. I chose a new touring board with a carbon paddle, coinciding with Lynne launching an annual membership for weekly lake access. I proudly became the first member, suggesting I be assigned number 001.

Achieving New Milestones

I took my new board to my first club session on my birthday weekend. Moving around the lake was effortless, and I achieved my longest paddle yet at 6.5km. I now feel confident enough to join other groups organizing events for social paddles in the local area, whereas before, I felt I would hold them all up. Now, I eagerly await the next Aquapaddle event, aiming for that 1-hour target and hoping to move up from last place.

My journey with paddleboarding and Ripple Rebels has been transformative. From struggling with basic skills to setting personal records, the support and training from Lynne and the community have been invaluable. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve, I highly recommend joining Ripple Rebels.
